Hillcrest Bowl

William W. Whitson, the developer of the Hillcrest Tract, owned the Hillcrest Bowl which was once located on the south side of Washington Street east of Fifth Avenue (on Village Hillcrest’s present site). Bowling alleys are disappearing all over San Diego, but there is still a gay bowling league.

Grab some friends, a croquet set and head to the park. Several locations are perfect for a court. HillQuest’s favorite spot for a court is the northwest corner of the Balboa Park along Sixth Avenue.

Located on Balboa Drive northeast of Laurel Street.

Roque

This game, similar to croquet, was once played on courts in Balboa Park near Sixth Avenue and Redwood Street. The City removed the courts in 2008.

Playgrounds

The closest public playground to the core of Hillcrest is in the northwest region of Balboa Park near Sixth and Spruce.

West: in Mission Hills a playground is located next to Grant School in Pioneer Park at 1420 Washington Place.

East: North Park Recreation Center sits at 4044 Idaho Street, south of the landmark water tank near El Cajon Boulevard.
