On January 6, 2003, Hillcrest resident and former judge Bonnie Dumanis
took the reins as the county’s highest law enforcement officer. In the
process she also made history by becoming the nation’s first openly
LGBT
district attorney. Shortly thereafter we caught up with her at a
brown-bag lunch and
open-table discussion with journalists.
HillQuest: What is your favorite thing about
living in
Hillcrest?
Dumanis: I enjoy how easy it is to get to everything.
Shops, restaurants and theaters are all nearby.
HQ: What
aspects of
Hillcrest would you like to see emulated in other neighborhoods of San
Diego?
BD: Its vibrancy and richness of
diversity.
The community works together to create a well-kept, clean and safe
neighborhood.
HQ: Of all the restaurants
that have come and gone in Hillcrest, which do you miss the most?
BD: Definitely the Chicken Pie Shop —
it had great food and character.
HQ: What do
you most enjoy showing to visitors to the neighborhood?
BD: Strolling along the sidewalks and looking in
the shops — it’s a very good neighborhood for walking.
Bonnie and her five-year
partner, Denise Nelesen, live
in the ‘hood with Jake, their dog.
Oh yeah…and the matzo ball soup is her first choice at City Deli.
What a difference a year makes!
Bonnie made an amazing physical transformation in 2004.
You
look marvelous!
