What people say about HillQuest.com & the Urban Guides

HillQuest Urban Guide ninth edition

“Just wanted to drop a note of thanks
— we were in town (well, actually, we stayed at the Hotel Del) for the weekend, and were lookign for a good walking route, and we took advantage of the foldout map in the last edition of HillQuest,  which we picked up at Bo’s Seafood market — it was a great route!”

Neal Parish

“Thanks for another superb job on your
annual Urban Guide. HillQuest stories, photos & layout are all first-rate! It’s a keeper that I look forward to collecting and sharing with friends so they can feel like locals, too!”

Best to you, Thomas

Ernie Bonn, University Heights

I took the latest Hillquest Guide home this weekend and read it cover to cover. It is terrific! The community is so lucky to have you as members. You both add so much to the experience that is Hillcrest. Please accept my thanks for the wonderful job you do.

Glenn Younger, Grah Safe & Lock, Hillcrest

HillQuest, volume 7 (2009-2010)I just read a HillQuest – what a delightful magazine. I like its shape, that it’s sturdy but most
of all snippet sized articles. I especially liked learning more about Morley Field. My husband played there in the 40s when he lived on Texas Street. I also liked “Get on the Bus”, page 91. I couldn’t agree more. We take the “2” downtown frequently. When we have a flight (we) connect with the “992” for a ride to the airport. Enough random rambling. Just wanted to say — good job!

Sincerely, Pat Taylor

Love Hillquest, great site– good for you. Hope all is wonderful… would love to catch up. Hugs & more hugs.

~Leslie

Thanks for keeping your site updated
so often with many of the important things going on around us (important to me, at least). Lloyd Snowden just wanted to say thank you for always bringing
the latest news stories to my attention immediately. i read many news magazines and papers. but you guys actually inform me before the “times” sometimes. i appreciate you guys and your website very much. Lloyd Snowden I didn’t know about the historical arm and I am a history buff. So love the stuff in the Urban Guide that really does a wonderful job at giving the reader
the spots to go and the history behind the area. Makes you really think :).

Paul Samson, proud to be a Hillcrester

And just as I was about to write and say how terrific your newest publication is. The writing’s
topnotch and so is its general appearance. You’re both to be congratulated on your latest triumph. Brava!!

Bob Grinchuk

By the way, I never told you – my Mom has HillQuest.com as one of her favorites and checks it all
the time. She lives in upstate New York and likes to know what’s going on here. She loves HillQuest.

Stephen Whitburn

I want to congratulate you on your superb Hillquest Urban Guide. The graphics, photos and text are beautiful. You are providing a living history of our community. Something that will be of interest to future historians, as well as today’s residents.

Andrew Towne HillQuest #6

I want to give a shout out and props to Ann Garwood and her longtime partner Nancy Moors of the HillQuest Guide (what a fabulous publication) for their leadership, dedication and neighborhood spirit when it comes to supporting Hillcrest. If I’m the old mayor of Hillcrest, then these women are our first ladies.

Nicole Murray-Ramirez

Also,
did you see the Congressman John Robert Lewis Bust I did on my website? He is the congressman who is fighting hard in Congress to help with human rights issues and that marriage bill for the gay community. He is cool, and I cried so much during the unveiling in Washington, D.C. We have a
special connection, and I was so moved by him. He is such a humanitarian.

Warmest regards, Claudio

Thanks for the crime information, Nancy. Thanks, too,
for posting my walks. You two are amazing for your knowledge
& quick action!

Patricia Fares, Urban
Safaris

I wanted to drop you a note to say hi and let you know that it was great seeing you after all these years. What a pleasurable surprise! Its been soooo… many years since I have stepped into Flicks
and I’m glad David and I were able to make it for the celebration and being able to see the some of the gang once again and to say farewell to Joe and to wish him the best. I pulled up HillQuest.com and what can I say but “awesome.” Great job.

We’re Canadian snowbirds who spent a delightful two weeks in January in San Diego, staying in the Park Manor Suites beside Balboa Park and enjoyed your community very much: walking, dining, shopping, etc. We picked up a free copy of your first guide at a book store and found it very useful with the bridge walks
and restaurant listings. We’ll certainly look for Volume 2 on a return trip, hopefully next winter.

Judy and John Kendle

I find something new at www.HillQuest.com every time I sign
on. LOVE the little movie-ettes!

Mike Friedberg

What a pleasant surprise!!! I am very flattered. You
and Nancy have done such a terrific job with HillQuest. I think that it’s a great resource
for Hillcrest. Thanks for including me on your web site. It’s been
great getting to know you and working with you and the Hillcrest Association.

Robert Young, Community Relations Liaison and City Council
District 3 Representative
for San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy

What a great website! My mom lived most of her teenage years
in the San Diego area, and I still have family there. I love the way your website draws in the whole community and all the history, that was so fascinating to read! I have been a proud supporter of the Pride celebrations both here in Portland and when I used to live in Seattle. Thanks again for sharing
your site with me, and for your link!

Bohemian Mama

I was impressed with the first edition of HillQuest from the
moment I opened it and started perusing it. I decided rather quickly we wanted
to be included in volume two. Have a joyous and blessed holiday season!HQ3cover small

Over 150 participants attended the 19th annual conference
of the International Network of Lesbian and Gay Officials this last weekend.
Thanks for your generous donation of HillQuest, an Urban Guide for each
of our gift bags. They were a big hit. I couldn’t be more pleased with your company’s contribution to the conference. I know San Diego will be remembered fondly not only for a successful event, but for your hospitality as well.

Toni Atkins, City Councilmember, Third District

I recently stumbled across your Urban Guide in my physician’s
waiting room. Having recently retired from the publications industry I
wanted to congratulate you on an informative, visually attractive and cohesive
document.

cover04small_commentsI took a look at HillQuest and I have to tell you — it’s amazing.
I love it! I love the cover. All the different pictures blend perfectly together
making you want to look at each individual one before you even open the book.
Once doing so, I started to read, beginning with your “About Us,” and
the next time I looked up, I was on page 47. The only reason I stopped there
was because someone walked into my office. I love the bits of history, the
explanations of the shops and eateries, the old photos, the fold out map,
the ads…I can’t find a thing wrong with it — and that’s
after reading through all 97 pages! You should be proud of this urban guide.
I have no interest in California whatsoever — you could even go so
far as to say I hate California, but after reading this front to back, I
found myself wanting to visit Hillcrest. Kudos!

Stacey Creecy, journalist, Huron, South Dakota

It’s the most thorough history of Hillcrest I

Great coverage of the storm that swept through the neighborhood
yesterday (11.21.04) morning. Thanks…and updating the web without electricity — I’m impressed!

Phil Henke, HillQuest fan

I was checking out your marvelous website and noticed that
the Walking Tour of Balboa Park link was broken. I think your site is wonderful. I lived in San Diego for 16 years and wished that I would have had something so wonderful to go to. This will be just the tool that I will recommend to all my friends and people that I talk to when they ask me about what they should do or what is the HIllcrest area of San Diego like. Keep up the good
work.

George Brewster

I love the front page, link to our website and especially
the wreath auction piece and request for a toy or blanket. You Rock!

Dale Dubach, Martinis Above Fourth

I visited your site and saw poor Kate. Looks like she was barely missed, thank goodness. It also looks like the fallen tree just missed a purple orchid tree that Chris Kehoe and some Girls Scouts planted
as part of Kate’s landscape. There is evidence that some of those large eucalyptus were planted
by Kate. They have such shallow root systems and with rain and wind — I know Balboa Park’s horticulturist is phasing out the Lemon Scented variety because they are a safety hazard. You might want to interview her for a story, she’s a super person, Kathy Puplava, let me know and I’ll look up her phone number.
Another interesting story about Kate (you may know)…
If you go Pioneer Park in Mission Hills, you’ll note a row of diagonal
eucalyptus trees planted across the park. Back when this was a cemetery,
Kate planted the trees to separate the Catholics from the Protestants. Your
website looks good, we’ll meet one of these days. Happy New Year.

I am a 4th grade student in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. I am writing a report and was wondering if I could use some of the pictures on your website for my report? Please let me know if its okay.

Hi! I picked up your guide from my hairstylist and love it, do you happen to have one for Gaslamp? Much thanks.

Stepheni Bodo, 21 CFR Consulting

I am sooooo impressed with your newest edition of HillQuest — you should franchise these around the country (even OUT of country). You could start with a Hawaii edition, eh? Seriously, you are on to something really terrific. I am amazed at how much neat stuff you’ve stuffed into those tiny pages. I’ve been reading for a couple of hours, and I’m not halfway through it yet. A great compliment to the website, too (and vice versa). I can’t express how proud I am of both of you for this very nice product. You have a hit!

Lair Davis, former editor of the San
Diego Gayzette,
Costa Rica

Dear Ann & Nancy:
What a wonderful find today… I stumbled across your HillQuest.com. I feel refreshed and energized by your wonderful work and feel as though I came home for a visit. Cheryle and I still have our homein Mission Hills, and Cheryle happens to be in SD to take care of the propertythis week. We now live in the Boston area, and have for the past three anda half years. We will come home to SD; we’re just not sure when (sooner rather than later, having seen your site!). Thank you for this wonderful gift!

Warmly,
Mary Lynn & Cheryle Rattey

Hi Ann and Nancy, This site is wonderful! Is there still
a link to the “Pernicam?” It’s
fun to see what’s happening around the corner from my place across
from Martinis. Keep up the good work!

Sam
