301 University decision postponed ’til 9/12

The struggle between pressure to build infill housing in urbanized areas and the backlash from citizens who say their neighborhoods weren’t built for that density…“Smart growth” means creating clusters that encourage pedestrianism and stimulate public transportation. But what good is the idea if people can’t leave their cars at home because the city has a woeful transit system and not nearly enough money to fix it? (CityBeat)
A continuance was granted until September 12 for the City Council to decide if 301 University (96 new condos, each with one parking space) is a go. The project will replace the one-story structures in this photo (Fourth and University) with a 12-story project. Perhaps new building projects should stop until San Diego’s community resources (especially public transportation and our aging infrastructure) catch up to neighborhood needs.
