A Panel of Political Leaders

UHMeeting3An array of political representatives met at the University Heights Community Association meeting at Alice Birney Elementary on Thursday evening. The meeting gave an opportunity to shed light on issues that not only affects local community members of University Heights, but affects citizens on city, county, state and federal levels.

State Senator Christine Kehoe, County Supervisor Ron Roberts, City Councilwoman Toni Atkins (standing), Joe Kocurek representing State Assemblywoman Lori Saldana and Todd Gloria representing Congresswoman Susan A. Davis, gathered together for a discussion panel to address the concerns of community members. With a broad spectrum of political leaders, topics of homelessness, the Living Wage Law, prescription drugs, taxes and city funding were addressed with different perspectives of government from local to federal. A perfect example of an issue that affects all levels of government that surfaced in the meeting was homelessness. Citizens expressed their concerns on the increase of homelessness and drug-related activities in their neighborhoods. Each leader took turns discussing the problems arising with homelessness and the programs created to provide solutions to those problems. But of course, homelessness is a continuing battle. The panel of political leaders reminds us that we, as citizens, must also do our part to get involved.
