Put on your cowboy boots and grab a Stetson because on Sunday, October 16 Hillcrest will turn country at their inaugural fall street festival Hoedown. There will be handsome cowgirls, pretty wranglers, a costume contest, streetside salon, a petting zoo, hay rides, many family friendly games and activities that will adorn University Avenue from Normal Street to Vermont…and LOTS of gay cowboys. The main stage will be at the intersection of University Avenue & Richmond Street.

Urban Kickers will be sponsoring the main stage with a country-themed line up while a festive DJ spins hits perfect for dancing in your cowboy boots — and line dancing lessons will be taught throughout the event.
Come hungry and ready to browse the vendor booths along with a tasty food court, featuring everything from juicy hot dogs to tamales, and selling handmade arts & crafts to satisfy local shoppers. YeeHaw!
“The Hoedown is important to Hillcrest because it ties in the history of early western culture and focuses on promoting roots music, folk dance, bluegrass music and traditional Americana entertainment,” says Jason Coleman who is planning the entertainment for Sunday afternoon/evening. He says the event will be good for people interested in learning about lesser known styles of dance and music, outside of mainstream pop, rock and electronica.
Coleman expressed excitement about the artists he’s lined up for the Hoedown. Acts that are scheduled to perform include Ballet Folklorico, Heritage Bluegrass Band, DJ Tim Harmon — who will be spinning country — as well as the dance troupe, Urban Kickers. The latter act, for which Coleman is the artistic director, “I really wanted to focus on groups with good crowd appeal, that could motivate the audience to get up and dance.”
