Ideas to make 2011 an even better year

Happy New Year from the HillQuest GalsThe U-T is asking: What can your neighborhood, city or county do in 2011 to make it better than it was in 2010? (If you can keep it under 75 words, they’ll consider publishing it in the print edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune.)

Here’s one suggestion from a Mission Hills resident…

Dear City of San Diego,
For 2011, please respect the historic resources of our older communities, especially those of University Heights, Bankers Hill, South & North Park, Loma Portal, Point Loma, La Jolla, Mission Hills, Hillcrest, etc.

The protection of our older bungalows, Craftsman, Spanish & Mission Revival and even our mid-century homes is important for many reasons. In 2011, please do a better job as we continue to lose historic homes due to short-sightedness on the part of the City.

You can do a better job on preventing the demolitions of our historic homes, you can also do a better job in 2011 of listening to the public, the various communities and the historic preservation community that works long hours as volunteers trying very hard to protect what we have. Once a home is scrapped, usually for a MacMansion, the community loses.

My resolution for the City of San Diego in 2011 is to please support us and not the special interests groups of those who merely want to profit at the expense of others.

I live in Mission Hills and have witnessed the loss of several bungalows this year. The City appears more interested in making money with new construction and appears to be less concerned about protecting our historic homes. For 2011, I would like to see the City of San Diego act fast on our two new proposed historic districts — Inspiration Heights and Mission Hills Annex Three. They would join our two existing historic districts.
Thanks,
A San Diego native
