Protect Hillcrest from improper demolitions

This afternoon at 2pm in City Council Chambers on the 12th floor of City Hall the Land Use & Housing Committee will hear public comment about improper demolitions in historic communities including University Heights, North Park, South Park, Bankers Hill, Mission Hills and Hillcrest.
Problems with the current process include: Demolitions are occurring with increasing regularity without permits and without posted public notices; Demolition permits are granted after a building is demolished; Historic buildings are being demolished without proper historic review; Demolition applications are submitted by property owners as a remodel but in reality most of the building is torn down except for a few walls; Demolitions and new development projects are listed under different permit numbers, or projects are submitted in a piece-meal fashion so as to Sixth avenue homes along Balboa Parkcircumvent proper mitigation measures.
Speak up (or email your concerns) re: the character and integrity of some of our oldest and most historic communities that are increasingly threatened by improper demolitions approved by the City of San Diego Development Services Department.

Now is the time for all of us who treasure our older neighborhoods to insist that the City develop more rigorous oversight of demolition permit applications. For the first time ever, the community has been invited to discuss these issues with the Land Use and Housing Committee. A strong showing at this afternoon’s hearing in City Council chambers will help persuade the city of the gravity of this issue and its devastating impact on our communities. Please attend this hearing to describe the problems with improper demolitions and to support a much more rigorous process for issuing demolition permits, especially in our older neighborhoods.
