What to do with a broke city…and state?!?

An open letter to the city council from Mission Hills resident Janet O’Dea

San Diego Redevelopment AgencyDear Council members,

Thanks for your time and service to our community. I am hopeful that you will NOT oppose the Governor’s plans to eliminate the city’s redevelopment agencies within the State as proposed by council member Faulconer. Downtown has been redeveloped, and this agency does not have the same urgency that it had so many years ago. The downtown area has been developed over these years. The redevelopment agency has done what it set out to do. Since the agency was not meant to be a permanent agency it seems that this is a good time to cut its funding. As it is really no longer necessary.
Additionally, the redevelopment agency owes the general fund a significant amount of money so if it can’t pay its obligations to the city then it must be a drain on our city as well as the State. My request is that you will find a way to cooperate with the State, to act for the good of our city and state as a whole and focus on our future.
Additionally, I have been concerned that there is a lack of transparency with the current approval process through the redevelopment agency and believe that the system as it is does not allow for elected representatives to be accountable to the public the way it is set up now.
I hope you will consider cooperation with our State at this time and look ahead to help our city and State by rejecting this proposal.

Thanks for your consideration. Janet O’Dea
