Mary Chase Walker, the first teacher in San Diego’s first school (in Old Town), becomes the center of controversy when she invites a black woman to lunch at the Franklin House. Some diners storm out, while others stare with contempt. After school enrollment plunges from 36 to 15 students, she resigns. This pioneer was also an early activist of the suffragette movement.
