Filbert saves a tree

Filbert Vigil and friends in front of century-old tree that he is trying to saveA tree which has stood for over a hundred years at the southeast corner of Richmond & Pennsylvania may be saved from the city’s chainsaws. After noticing a big white X on the tree across the street, Hillcrest native Filbert Vigil, center at left, spoke out for the neighborhood landmark, and he’s been able to make a difference. Thanks to Adriene Hughes for sharing her beautiful photos.

Filbert outreached to the Hillcrest Town Council, Councilman Todd Gloria’s office, the city and KUSI’s Filbert the tree (Richmond & Pennsylvania in Hillcrest)Michael Turko who on Friday taped a piece that will be shown on Channel 9/51 today, Wednesday (10/27). HTC board member Luke Terpstra spoke on behalf of the community thanking the city for giving the tree a reprieve until it can be “analyzed by several sets of educated eyes” according to City of San Diego employee Mario Sierra.

Several neighbors (above) stopped by to share encouragement support for the tree as did Mr. Sierra who said that an extension will be granted and no action will be taken to remove the tree while the Street Division determines if the tree meets the criteria for a tree protection designation. An update will be given at the November 9 HTC meeting. Everyone’s welcome to attend.
