Midday on Saturday a body was found in Mission Valley’s rain-swollen SD River. Another tree fell on Highway 163 (at Robinson) during the night pinning cars and stopping travel for over an hour before it was removed with chain saws. Overnight rain in Mission Valley was 1.77 inch — the same amount that usually falls during the entire month of March. Lindbergh Field (SD’s official weather recording station) averages about 10.75 inches of annual rainfall (this year the total is now 21.06 inches).

FYI: This year’s record rain could mean a record-breaking mosquito breeding season for our financially-strapped county. Homeowners are gonna be asked to chip in when, a few months from now, the county plans to mail out ballots asking them to pay $8 a year to cover costs to keep the West Nile virus from exploding. Water features or swimming pools in backyards have become hotbeds for mosquito larvae. The Department of Environmental Health says all you have to do is add larvae-eating fish. You may get them free from the county.
