Benny Cartwright and friendsBalboa Park’s majestic Spreckels Organ Pavilion was the site for Sunday afternoon’s kick off to next weekend’s LGBT Pride festivities including Saturday’s parade through Hillcrest followed by the two-day festival in the Martson Point area of Balboa Park. Emceed by Laura Jane, the rally provided a stage for year’s award recipients, speakers and entertainers to motivate, enlighten and revive the crowd. Pride volunteers Benny Cartwright, Ricky Cervantes, Isaac Castro and Marcus Fisher sold bottled water and shared info re: next weekend.

Multiple performers and speakers brought life to the stage where together a commitment to the LGBT equal rights movement, celebration of our unity and community diversity was renewed. This first event of the Pride celebrations, offered an opportunity for the community to stand together and celebrate a shared vision of freedom and equality.

The outdoor event commemorated the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City’s Greenwich Village, which is considered to be the commencement of the contemporary lesbian and gay liberation movement.
