Black jellyfish, Coronado beachThe mysterious black jellyfish has made its fifth known visit to Southern California shallows this summer when the huge (and extremely rare) gelantinous plankton suddenly appeared along San Diego beaches last month, causing an upsurge in reports of swimmers getting stung.

They have a decent sting… but they’re certainly not deadly.
