San Diego’s First Library

wednesday-clubThank you, Lydia

In 1885, The Wednesday Club was formed by 33 prominent San Diego women with a purpose to study “artistic and literary culture.”  Lydia Horton, wife of city founder Alonzo Horton, was their first president. When Andrew Carnegie donated money for small town libraries, Lydia worked to get the first facility west of the Mississippi.

The Wedesday Club still meets most weeks in their clubhouse designed by Hazel Waterman along Sixth Avenue at Ivy Lane.
