Sidewalk Sale & Taste a Success

The first Hillcrest sidewalk sale in decades was held last Saturday, April 19th in conjunction with the annual Taste of Uptown. A record 1,200 patrons enjoyed food samples from over 45 Hillcrest restaurants and purchased bargains from 35 retail businesses that expanded onto the sidewalk for the event.
Shopkeepers set up tables in front of their stores and displayed a wide array of products including books, apparel, shoes, outerwear, housewares, hardware, candles, plants and garden supplies. Several merchants donated gifts for free drawings which included brunches at Baja Betty’s and Urban Mo’s, a cake from City Deli, gift baskets from Co-Habitat, candle and body products from Cathedral and a large, fully-stocked tool box from Hillcrest Ace Hardware.

“It was such a success that we plan to do it again,” said Michael Wright, president of the Hillcrest Business Improvement Association (HBIA). “We had great participation from our members and good comments from customers telling us how much they enjoyed spending the afternoon in Hillcrest. It was a nice feeling to get such good participation for this first time coordinated event. We hope to get even more merchants involved in our next sidewalk sale.”

For more info contact the HBIA at (619) 299-3330. The association meets the second Tuesday of each month in the Joyce Beers Community Center in the Uptown District from 5-6:30pm. All Hillcrest businesses are members and are encouraged to become involved. The next HBIA event will be the 20th annual CityFest street fair which will be held on Sunday, August 10th along Fifth Avenue south of University.
